Twenty One Pilots are back at it with their new single “The Contract”. Set to be the first song on their eighth-coming album “Breach”, the song has an eerie electronic sound combined with drums in a similar, if not the same key as their first track on their 2015 hit album “Blurryface”, “Heavydirtysoul”.

Diving into the story behind the song, it’s a continuation of a ten year storyline. For those who aren’t die hard clikkies or don’t frequent their music often may be confused behind it’s meaning. In a nutshell, both the song and the music video is a follow up to their last song off the last album “Clancy” in their music video for “Paladin Strait”; In which the protagonist Clancy (portrayed by frontman Tyler Joseph) goes back to the city of Dema, in which he’s escaped before. It’s kind of like the hunger games in a way because the city of Dema is closed off and confined. He has a battle with the head bishop who ends up seizing control, capturing the former Dema citizen. “The Contract” picks up from there, detailing the determination of Clancy to escape the dark, dreary, confined city once more.

Deciphering lyrics from the pre-chorus “I check the doors, check the windows and pull the blinds // I check the clock, wondering what he’ll pull this time // I have a feeling that necromancer’s outside // And I’m just trying to stay quiet” , you can tell that the bishops are keeping a close eye on the protagonist, as to not let him escape again.

There’s so much to unpack with this new single, in which is described by the band as the start of the end to this story.

On top of the song, Twenty One Pilots just announced their “The Clancy Tour: Breach” which kicks off on September 18th in Cincinnati, Ohio and expected to run through October across North America. Sign up for pre access here:
