Who is Felicity?

Felicity is the pop girl whose music you didn’t know you needed. Until now. With her soulful voice, Felicity has a way of conveying her own life experiences and making them universal at the same time.

After bouncing around to different cities (and countries! She was born in Perth, Australia), Felicity honed her sound and settled in Music City (aka Nashville, TN). In 2023, songwriter Johnny Gates signed the Aussie native to his new label, East Music Row Records. On said label, Felicity has since released a handful of singles and - in 2024 - dropped her debut EP, “You Take Me To Dinner, But You’ll Never Feed My Soul”.

So far this year, Felicity has released the singles: “3 Martinis,” “I Know Why They’re Screaming” (which was added to Spotify’s ‘Pop n’ Fresh’ and Apple Music’s ‘New in Alternative’ playlists), and - most recently - the pensive “Half Sad.” Fans eagerly await this pop star’s next move!

Hi, Felicity! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview!

Q1: Your Instagram bio is all over the place (literally and figuratively! And I mean that in the coolest way possible!), “Aussie girl in a country town writing pop songs??” How did that end up happening?

A: Thank you for having me! Ha I’ve always been all over the place (literally and figuratively), as a kid I grew up in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, and America so I’ve always felt a bit like an alien. When I was 18 I moved to NYC for music and loved it there but the pandemic really took its toll and I needed a fresh perspective so that’s how I ended up in Nashville.

Q2: I love the Amy Winehouse reference in “There’s Been A Lot Going On”! (“Think I just need some breakfast / and to put on my safety song / Yeah, when I’m spinnin’ Amy, my tears dry on their own”) Is Amy your favorite singer?

A: I’m so happy you caught that line as it’s one of my favorites!! She’s definitely top 5 for me for sure. LOVE her.

Q3: Who are some of your other musical influences?

A: I was raised on a smattering of different things. Much like [me] they were all over the place geographically. My parents also had the most random music taste. As a kid, my parents put me on to Amy Winehouse, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Tracy Chapman, Celine Dion, and John Denver for the most part. Then as a teen I discovered Adele, Hozier, Lorde, Lana, Jon Bellion… The list goes on… and I was toast.

Q4: Within a short timeframe (spanning May-June 2018, according to Spotify), you put out the singles: “Poison”, “Burnt Sugar”, “Pilot With a Fear of Heights” (a total bop, by the way!) and “Happily Paralyzed”. And then there’s a pause in music releases until 2024. Songwriter Johnny Gates signed you to his label in 2023. What happened with your music during that gap of time? (if you’re ok with sharing, of course)

A: I haven’t talked about this before but enough time has passed that the wound is a little less fresh ha (nervous laughter).

Honestly I was in a deal when I was very young and had a lot of trouble getting out of it. As a result I lost opportunities I’d worked very hard for. I was alone in New York and 20 years old. It knocked the wind out of me almost permanently for a little bit. That, followed by the pandemic, was um… the worst? Anyways, I now truly hope everyone from that period in my life is thriving. Walk through the fire, keep going, right?

Q5: In your song, “I Prefer You In My Head”, there’s a line that goes, “You’ve got me wishin’ on a star / that you would go straight into cardiac arrest / so you could feel what’s in my chest when we’re apart”. Damn! That line definitely stopped me in my tracks.

Care to elaborate on what (or who?) “I Prefer You In My Head” is about?

A: It’s a gutting song that I feel I cheated the emotional system with. It’s not about me, it’s about one of my best friends who’s also a writer on the song. She came in an hour late and laid face down on the carpet, she was GOING THROUGH IT with her man at the time (she’s since dumped him - yay) and said “I don’t know guys, I just prefer the version of him that I created in my head”... We finished the song in like 2 hours.

Official “Half Sad”single cover

Q6: Let’s talk about your latest single, “Half Sad”. At one point or another, we’ve all felt that we don’t always have it together. But that’s ok. The single cover sees you looking over at your passenger who is, essentially, another version of yourself. Does this song cover a specific point in your life or just in general?

A: Yeah, I wrote it when I was really going through it (I promise I’m not really going through it all the time, it just seems like it). I was working two bar jobs as a side hustle trying to finish my music and felt very alone in Nashville. I was probably going out too much and started to lose sight of myself. I’d take my makeup off after driving home from work and look at myself in the mirror thinking “how far down do I have to dig before I hit the real me.” “Half Sad” really wrote itself as a form of therapy for me.

Q7: What can fans anticipate on your future music releases? Hopefully unreleased songs, too! I heard you have an entire catalog of unreleased goodies that you brought over with you to EMR Records!

A: I did! I won’t say too much YET, but there’s lots of new music, and shows, and goodies coming very soon and I’m HYPED to share it with you guys.
