Lydia Night returns with the punchy “The Hearse”, the second single off her upcoming debut solo album. The album is rumored to be titled ‘P.O.P.’, a pop star power move indeed.

The track opens with the hypnotizing, sing-songy refrain, “Break your heart first, break your heart first…” as if the former frontwoman of The Regrettes is teasing listeners. She then bluntly states, “You're obsessin', don't care …I'm not invested, but I'll see where this ends / Can't hurt to try it, we could always be friends”. She’s unsure the friendship will lead to something more, but she will give it a go anyway.

“I wrote [“The Hearse”] after I went and filmed a TV show, and I had a little crush on someone on the show. And then I kind of got friend-zoned, and that just really hurt.” Night explained in her ongoing Instagram video series, ‘Pop or Flop’, which follows the 24-year-old on her quest for popstar world domination. Night initially previewed “The Hearse” on her Instagram Reels back in September 2024.

The pre-chorus rolls along as the singer begins to feel differently about this person as she sighs, “Fine, I like you-“ There’s a brief pause, as Night suddenly realizes the person of her affection has gone MIA. She then wonders aloud, “Wait, where'd you go? (Huh?)”

Crashing drums explode into, “Oh, baby, that kinda hurt / I was supposed to pull up the hearse / Wow, baby, I'm in the dirt / I was supposed to break your heart first”, recalling the booming chorus of Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap”.

The second verse finds Night coming to terms with her feelings toward this person as she admits, “I didn't like you (Okay, a little)”. You can picture Lydia being coy -saying this line with just a hint of shyness. Conflicting thoughts remain, though, “But just enough to meet you in the middle”. Night insists, “I wasn't gonna be the one to get screwed / I was supposed to be the one to ditch you”. She “Should let it go, but my ego's in my ear”. It’s at this point Night’s backing vocals cut in with annoyance, “(Him? Really?)” As if she can’t believe she’s falling for this person. Him? Of all people!

In the bridge, Night doesn’t sound too caught off guard as this person just up and leaves. This time, it sounds like it’s for good. She seems to shrug it off with a nonchalant, “I'm just pissed you get to say / That you're the one that walked away”. Yet, the former Regrettes front woman admits she’s partially to blame for the person leaving, “…But I compromised, that's my mistake”. Along with the previously released single “Pity Party”, “The Hearse” is further proof that the New Orleans native’s solo music delivers. Be sure to keep Lydia Night on your music radar, folks. An artist to watch.

“The Hearse” was written by Night along with Idarose, who produced the track. The single was released on May 9, 2025, through Warner Records. Night’s debut solo album is tentatively scheduled to be released sometime in 2025!
