You know her best for her song “Messy”, but now Lola Young has given us a new single, “One Thing”. A brutally honest song about what she wants, and she is not afraid to say it. Young is known for her raw, emotionally honest songwriting with a R&B Soul voice with an edgy flair. “One Thing” is liberating. The song feels like a direct message – the subject wants sex without strings attached. More importantly, Young explores what many are too afraid to say and gives us the power and confidence to say it. This message is especially for women.
Young said in an Instagram post, “It may seem spontaneous, but it’s not as I’ve been thinking about releasing something liberating and sexy and freeing for a while.” There’s a pop and R&B flair to the sound. It almost feels like nostalgia, P!nk “Don’t Let Me Get Me” style to it as well. This is especially present in the music video.
The single is accompanied by a music video, which gives us a P!nk vibe, and it’s refreshing to see. Also makes sense because the music video is directed by David Myers who directed some of P!nk’s music videos and also directed music videos for Sabrina Carpenter, Harry Styles, and Ariana Grande. The music video shows Young preparing for a boxing match with a guy and switches to also admiring different guys too. It's super refreshing to see the influence live. It’s also refreshing for a female artist like Lola Young to make a sexy song like “One Thing”. It’s what the music industry needs more of, and it needs to be okay.
Lola Young is striving to make women feel comfortable to be able to take control and say what you want. Because at the end of the day, women do not need to be afraid of exploring their wants and needs.
