Lauren Spencer Smith Paints Heartbreaking Picture Of Loss On Poignant “Bridesmaid”
Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Lauren Spencer Smith is back with her heartbreaking new single, “bridesmaid,” which shows how best friends don’t always carry over into adulthood. Spencer Smith rose to prominence on the long-running singing competition’s 18th season in 2020, placing inside the Top 20. She is best known for her 2022 song, “Fingers Crossed,” which went viral on TikTok.
Over plucky guitar, the singer recalls how, in the first verse, “We'd stay awake for hours, picking out the kinds of flowers / I'd have in my bouquet /Said you'd catch it on the day.” And how “…you felt like my older sister. The one I never had.”
But now, all that’s changed. She’s left wondering where it all went wrong. “I thought you'd be my bridesmaid / It's funny how our lives changed …When you said you'd be my best friend You'd love me till the world ends.” Spencer Smith has since found the man of her dreams, “And now I finally found the man that I adore”, but suddenly grows quiet upon remembering her former best friend will no longer be there on her big day: “But you won't be my bridesmaid anymore.”
The second verse finds the Canadian singer-songwriter reminiscing, “I miss when we were younger, laughing through the heat of summer / Long talks in your back seat. Sharing secrets, I still keep.” She sounds giddy again, looking back fondly on the friendship. It’s all rosy until Spencer Smith suddenly feels like she did or said something wrong to completely obliterate the friendship, “I'm stuck with my regrets / Staring at your empty dress.” A shell of what once was.
The bridge finds the singer wondering, “Who's gonna fix my hair and wipe the tears away? / …Who's gonna stand behind me when I say, "I do?" / Oh, it'll be someone, but not you.” That last line hits the listener square in the face. A devastatingly beautiful song.
“bridesmaid” was written by Spencer Smith, along with Jake Torrey, LOSTBOY & Skyler Stonestreet. The track was produced by LOSTBOY. The track follows the previous single “IF KARMA DOESN’T GET YOU (I WILL)”, both songs ahead of Spencer Smith’s sophomore album ‘THE ART OF BEING A MESS’. Pre-order/pre-save HERE.
