Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan Channel Y2K Vibes On “Young & Dumb.”

Pop-punkers rejoice!

Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan collaborate on a new single reflecting on their careers spanning the past twenty years. Released through Big Noise on May 9th, in celebration of the second leg of Lavigne’s ‘Greatest Hits’ Tour, “Young & Dumb” is the perfect summer tune for Millennials wanting to relive their noughties glory days.

Lavigne takes the first verse, recalling her early days of living in her native Napanee, Ontario, her meteoric rise to fame at 17, and her now-trademark “tomboyish” appearance, “Rockin’ a necktie, black eyeliner. White tank top.”

In the pre-chorus, Lavigne goes on to brag about how she’s “Livin' like a rockstar / Trashin' hotel rooms (Oops) / Let's get stupid tattoos (Okay) / 'Cause we've got nothin' to lose (Ha).” The song then dives into a chorus that vaguely recalls Lavigne’s own “Here’s To Never Growing Up” (off her 2013 self-titled album) mixed with Olivia Rodrigo’s “get him back!”

Simple Plan frontman, Pierre Bouvier, takes the second verse, “We're back again, now it's twenty years later,” as you can picture Avril waving in the background as she’s heard exclaiming, “Hey, boys!” in the backing vocals. Bouvier takes pride in Simple Plan’s pop-punk past while simultaneously referring to the band’s 2002 single, “I’m Just A Kid,” with the lyrics “I'm just a kid, still a pop-punk skater.”

Bouvier and Lavigne continue to dismiss authority figures: “They told me, ‘Get a job,’ but I said, ‘No way. ‘" as if to say, “It’s still not just a phase, Mom!” Mirroring Lavigne’s rockstar debauchery in the pre-chorus, Bouvier continues with, “Livin' like a rockstar / Trashing dressing rooms (My bad) / Smashing Fender guitars (Woo).” After all, as these Canadian exports put it, “we got nothin' to lose”!

The second leg of Lavigne’s ‘Greatest Hits’ Tour picks up May 18, 2025, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Following a July 4th Quebec, Canada date, the tour concludes October 18, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Get your tickets here! Listen to “Young & Dumb” here.
