Soft Spot’s intimate show at One City Tap had us feeling anything but “Down”

The Connecticut based alternative/grunge rock trio Soft Spot (typically styled in lower case) took their energetic presence to One City Tap in Chicago on June 20th. In what was a cozy, intimate performance, they brought tight grooves and a captivating essence to their set.

They were on their “This Will Make You Cry” summer tour with their good friends Drink Baby, who hail from New York, offering a set complimentary to Soft Spot in tastes to Kurt Vile, Diiv, Turnover and Beach Fossils.

Soft Spot recently released their Debut Album “This Will Make You Cry”, in which they included songs such as “Down” and “Screw It” into their set.

Who inspires soft spot??

I got to chat with (and even pass a joint with) the Connecticut kings of rock and got to ask them who some of their biggest musical influences are. Here’s the artists they jotted down in my notes app:

Gianni (Vocals/Guitar): Hum, Alice In Chains, Narrow Head, Diiv

Dave (Bass): Rancid, Ramones, Soundgarden

Marc (Drums): A Tribe Called Quest, Turnstile, Sublime, Superheaven

Overall thoughts:

Behind the rockstar image, Soft Spot have been one of the kindest bands I’ve worked with and are genuinely some of the most easy going, hard working artists I’ve come across so far that are happy to play anywhere they can. Whether it’s a small bar gig like One City Tap or a larger sized venue, Soft Spot can make any venue feel like a stadium. The world is their oyster. I’m excited to see where the trio goes from here.
